Terms of use

The rules for using this site, in plain English. They are short because the game is free, there is nothing to buy and there is no account to agree to anything with.

Who you are dealing with

Hoops Auction is made and run by one person, Armaan Ebrahim, in India ("I", "me"). By using the site you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use it. What the site collects about you is set out separately in the privacy policy.

A game, not gambling

Hoops Auction is free. Every budget in it is imaginary: it is not money, it cannot be bought, won, sold or cashed out, and it has no value outside a single game. There are no prizes, no stakes and nothing to buy. Results come from a simulation. They are not predictions about real games and they are not betting advice.

Who can play

The game is made for a general audience. If you are under 13, or under the age your country sets for agreeing to terms like these, use it with a parent's or guardian's permission, and do not type your real name.

Playing online

Online rooms put you at a table with other people, often strangers. The name you choose is shown to all of them, so it must not:

• be hateful, harassing, threatening, sexually explicit or otherwise abusive;
• pretend to be somebody else, including a real player or anybody connected with this site;
• contain anybody's personal information, including your own full name or contact details;
• infringe somebody else's rights, or be unlawful where you are.

And while you play, please do not:

• disrupt other people's games, for example with scripts or by exploiting a bug;
• try to overload, probe or break into the site, or collect data from it in bulk;
• use the site for anything unlawful.

I can remove a name, close a room or block traffic that breaks these rules. I cannot watch every table, and I am not responsible for what other players type, but I will act on reports.

Reporting a problem

To report a name or anything else you think is abusive or unlawful, email auctionhoops@gmail.com with the six-character room code, the name, and what is wrong with it. I read every report, aim to act on it within a few days, and will tell you what I did. Rooms delete themselves 30 minutes after a game ends, so reporting quickly helps.

Games in progress

Rooms are temporary. The site does its best to keep your seat when your connection drops (a computer plays it for you if you are away for more than 45 seconds, and gives it back when you return), but a game can still be interrupted by a lost connection or maintenance, and nothing about a game is kept for long. A finished room is deleted after 30 minutes.

Ownership, and what belongs to other people

The site's code, design, writing, ratings, prices and generated tables are mine. You are welcome to share your results, result links and screenshots, and to talk about, stream or write about the game.

Players' names and statistics are facts about real careers, derived from public data and credited on the about page. The portraits on the all-time list belong to their photographers and are used under the Creative Commons licences credited beside them. The open-source software and fonts the site is built with are used under their own licences, listed in the third-party notices.

No affiliation

Hoops Auction is an independent game. It is not affiliated with, endorsed, sponsored or approved by the National Basketball Association, any of its teams, the National Basketball Players Association, any player, or Sports Reference (Basketball Reference). "NBA" and the names of NBA teams are trademarks of their respective owners, used here only to say which league and which teams are meant. A player's appearance in the game or on a list means he was good at basketball, not that he has anything to do with this site.

No guarantees

The site is provided "as is" and "as available". I try to keep it running and the numbers right, but I do not promise that it will always be available, free of errors, or that any rating, price or statistic is accurate. It may change, or stop, at any time.

Limits on liability

To the extent the law allows, I am not liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for any loss of data, arising from your use of a free game, and my total liability to you for anything connected with the site is limited to the amount you paid to use it, which is nothing. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, such as liability for fraud, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence.

Your rights where you live

If you live somewhere that gives consumers rights which cannot be signed away, such as the European Union or the United Kingdom, nothing in these terms takes those rights away.

The law that applies

These terms are governed by the laws of India, and the courts of India have jurisdiction over any dispute about them. If you are a consumer, you may also bring a claim in the courts of the country where you live and rely on its mandatory consumer protections.

Changes to these terms

If these terms change, this page changes with them and the date at the top moves. Using the site after a change means you accept the new version.
